Flying Dog - Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout
Usually, I’m not a big oyster stout fan - I guess I always feel that just because you can mix stuff with a stout doesn’t mean you should. There is something to love about this one though. The Pearl Necklace starts with a faint chicory aroma along with a bit if earthiness. The taste is well balanced with earthy hop notes and an interesting complexity. For a medium-bodied stout, there is more nuance than I would expect. It’s not my new favorite stout, but it’s a damn fine offering.

Flying Dog - Doggy Style Pale Ale
Doggy Style starts with a nice hoppy, tropical fruit aroma. Unfortunately, the hop flavor doesn’t follow through as much on the flavor, which has a lighter body than I expected. The finish is lightly bitter with a bit of pine and a light malt body. It’s an okay pale ale - just not quite my style.

Breckinridge Brewery - 471 Double Hopped IPA
Nice tropical fruit aroma with hops to spare. The beer pours a dark coppery color like a double. The flavor is smooth with a biscuity taste underlying a tropical fruit and citrus hop. There’s a nice toasty depth in the aftertaste as well. A good beer.

Start Hill - Grateful Pale Ale
Nice hoppy (grassy with a hint of citrus) aroma for a Pale Ale. The flavor is a nice balance of mealtimes with a little citrus and slight bread-like malt flavor. A solid aroma-forward, lighter bodied pale ale. Just what this hot summer eve needed.

Southern Tier - Live Bottle Conditioned Pale Ale
I generally love bottle-conditioned ales and generally don’t love Southern Tier, so this one was an experiment. Palpably sweet grapefruit aroma. The taste is very well balanced and interesting with a nice zing of the bottle conditioning. The flavor is a bit light-bodied for me, but the aftertaste is smooth, hoppy and lingering. Maybe Southern Tier deserves another look…

Sierra Nevada - Nooner Session IPA
Another IPA from the Sierra Nevada IPA 4-Ways pack, this is one that worried me. I love Sierra Nevada, but session IPAs usually leave me empty. Great resiny-citrus and pine aroma. While light bodied, there is a heavy citrus-grapefruit flavor. I like more body, but I guess that’s the price you pay for a lighter beer. I guess I could make that trade off…but not all the time.

Sierra Nevada - Snow Wit White IPA
I have had a soft spot in my heart for Sierra Nevada since the time I stopped in Chico, CA on 25-cent pitcher night for the local brews. Well, that and it’s generally the best option at a lot of bars that don’t care about beer. So with that said, I was delighted to see the “IPA 4-Way” box from Sierra Nevada! Starting with Snow Wit, this beer has a caramely, floral aroma. The taste starts out floral, but opens up to a delicious grapefruit flavor. The hops are well mixed with the Belgian yeast. It’s a very well made beer, and while I wouldn’t drink it every night, it’s a great start to the four pack.

SweetWater - 420 Extra Pale Ale
This one has an understated floral and earthy aroma, with a very caramel-malty flavor. I was hoping for a little more hop flavor on this one. It’s well balanced, and inoffensive, I guess it’s just the style that left me wanting more.

Devils Backbone - Dark Abby Belgian-Inspired Ale
I love Delvils Backbone Brewery, but I skipped Dark Abby for a while because “Belgian Inspired” sounds a little scary. The dark color is promising, and the taste is a malty caramel delight. There’s a mild earthy hop flavor to balance the smokey malt backbone, and the beer has a nice warming medium body. I am not always a huge fan of Belgian ales, and the “Belgian Inspired” label is bizarre, but this is a good beer.

Red Hook - Audible Ale
I love a mystery beer with absolutely no description on the bottle of what may be inside. But with the tourney on, Dan Patrick’s Audible Ale seemed like a good choice. Wrong. Malty, generic ale, with a bitter malty background and not many redeeming qualities. Maybe the bottle I got was skunked, or maybe it’s just a crumby beer…

21st Amendment - Sneak Attack Saison
I’ll admit it: the whole Saison trend is lost on me. I can see how some are okay, but many seem like watered down Belgians. I have a soft spot in my heart for 21st Amendment and decided to give this one a try. It’s got a nice clove aroma and good crisp flavor. It’s got a nice medium body with citrus and clove notes and I don’t get any after taste. It’s a good all-round saison. Too bad it’s just a saison. Still not my cup of tea.

DogfishHead Sixty-One
I’ll admit: sometimes I buy a beer purely out of curiosity. And then that moment comes when you pour a bright reddish-orange glass of ale and start to question your decision making. This one smells like DogfishHead IPA, and the taste isn’t far off, though it oddly also tastes like a blush wine. The taste goes together well, and while delicious and interesting. I don’t know that I would ever seek out this beer again.

Samuel Adams - Rebel IPA
It’s with low expectations that I picked up a bottle of Sam Adams’ new IPA. I’ve found their IPAs to be hit or miss. The aroma on this one is right on, with deliciously resiny pine aromas that evoke a lot of other west coast style IPAs. The flavor is okay, but a bit too sweet and bread-like for me. Not the best IPA, but not bad and certainly better than I expected.
