Sierra Nevada & Bells - Maillard’s Odyssey Imperial Dark Ale

This is the end of my beer camp box, and what a great way to end. I’ve been pulling bottles at random, so it’s surprising to get one I’m sure I’ll love at the end.

Maillad’s pours a jet black color and smells like a fruitier stout. The taste has a bit of hop to it, but the malt is the real story. There’s a bit of everything here, with a chocolaty coffee flavor that lingers. Yum yum yum!

Sierra Nevada & Ballast Point - Electric Ray India Pale Lager

I was delighted to see a collaboration between Ballast Point, but an IPL….well, maybe my expectations were tempered. Electric Ray has a nice floral aroma when poured out. The flavor adds a citrus hop taste and a lighter lager “crispness” and malt structure. It’s got a clean, hoppy aftertaste. While a stellar IPL, it just isn’t my cup of tea…

Sierra Nevada & Cigar City - Yonder Bock Tropical Maibock

Very light earthy hop aroma on this beer with more of a sweet caramel smell. The taste is light and delicious with a fruity yet earthy hop character that somehow meshes incredibly with a rich caramely toasty malt backbone and gives a fantastic aftertaste. This almost tastes like a light Barleywine. Yum!

Sierra Nevada & Russian River Brewing - Yvan the Great Belgian Style Blonde

This is an interesting collaboration — once again, I really like both brewers.

Yvan pours the expected flaxen-blonde color and smells like a Belgian-style brew, with banana and clove scents. The flavor has hints of hop, but nothing overpowering - it all just…fits…with the beer. A nice smooth malty aftertaste finishes the taste. Not normally my style of choice, but, wow. Good stuff.

Flying Dog Brewing - Raging Bitch Belgian-Style IPA

Normally, I’m not a fan of Belgian-style IPAs, but there’s something about this one. Piney citrus aroma and flavor to this beer, which nicely compliments the spicy Belgian yeast flavor. Good stuff.

Sierra Nevada & Victory Brewing - Alt Route Altbier

Alt Route starts with a sweet, malty aroma. The flavor is centered around the malt, with layers of malt flavor. There is a light undertone is hop flavor and a smooth aftertaste. It’s a nice beer, but a bit forgettable in my book.

Now we’re talking! This beer pours out jet black with a tan foam and has creamy coffee smell. The flavor is dark and slightly smokey with a chocolaty coffee aftertaste. Good stuff!

Sierra Nevada & Allagash Brewing - Myron’s Walk Belgian-Style Pale Ale

Another interesting beer. Normally, I steer clear of Belgian-Style Pale Ales, but I like both producers here. This one smells lightly of pine & floral hops. The taste is all Belgian yeast at first, but opens up to a nice citrusy hop flavor and after taste. Overall, it didn’t convert me to Belgian-Style Pale Ales, but I would have another one of these.

Deschutes Brewery - Fresh Squeezed IPA
Anytime I’m within the distribution range of Deschutes, I pick up a bottle. This fresh hopped IPA did not disappoint. The aromas of citrus and tropical fruit are immediately apparent when you crack the bottle open. The flavor is more fruit, with a taste that’s almost too sweet. Great smooth finish to this one as well. A delicious beer!

Yum yum yum yum! This one pours golden amber and smells a little bit hoppy. The taste is a delicious blend of hops and a rye flavor on bock-style hops. Great combination. Already gone.

Sierra Nevada & 3 Floyds - Chico King Pale Ale
Now we’re talking. This one reeks of hops! This has a nice resiny-earthy hop aroma. The malts are…an afterthought really. This is just a nice over-hopped pale ale. The aftertaste is not great, which seems to be the only knock against this one.

Sierra Nevada & Asheville Brewers Alliance - Tater Ridge Scottish Ale

I’m starting to wonder if this beer camp was a good idea… I mean, beer brewed with sweet potatoes?

Tater ridge pours a nice dark brownish orange hue. The aroma is lightly hopped with a slight molasses / burnt sugar smell. The flavor has a nice balance but for some reason tastes a bit sweet to me. There is a slight toasty finish, however, that really makes me like this one. It almost tastes like a black IPA. As I continue to drain the glass, it grows on me more and more…

Sierra Nevada & Firestone Walker - Torpedo Hoppy Pilsner.

This hoppy pilsner pours a light golden flax color. The smell is grassy and floral. The taste is true to the Pilsner name, with nice light malt flavor backing a floral hop flavor. I’m not a huge pilsner fan, but this is clearly a good one.

Sierra Nevada + New Glarus - There and Back English-Style Bitter
Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Series
Wow! Today at the grocery store I picked up 12-pack of collaborations between Sierra Nevada and brewers from across the country. It’s like Christmas morning!

This English style bitter pours a nice golden-brown. The aroma has an earthy-woody noble hop character. The beer tastes like a bitter with a toasty malt and a lot of fruity, earthy hops on the finish. A nice start, but a bit too “old-world” for tastes.

Long Trail Brewing - Farm House Ales - White IPA
My brother took a dip of this one and said, “Wow! There’s something different about that! …I don’t know if I like it or not, but it’s DIFFERENT.” In this case, there are flavors of grapefruit and coriander, giving the beer almost a Belgian IPA character. The malt is nice and light, and the beer has a smooth finish with almost no after-taste. A good beer.
